How to tell a genuine Ty plush from a fake

Ty plush is widely copied. Unfortunately.

Counterfeits appear on marketplaces, at markets and occasionally in discount stores. The good news is that fakes are usually easy to spot once you know what to look for, and the checks take less than a minute.

Start with the heart tag. Genuine Ty products carry a red heart-shaped swing tag with the Ty logo, the character name and a birthday or short poem inside. The printing is crisp and the card stock feels firm. Blurred text, thin card or a missing inner page are warning signs.

Check the sewn-in tush tag next. It should include Ty branding, manufacturing details and country information, stitched neatly into a seam. Loose threads, crooked placement or spelling errors point to a copy. Counterfeiters often get close on the front tag and give themselves away here.

Look closely at the eyes. Ty eyes are clean, glossy and evenly set, with consistent glitter where the character is meant to sparkle. Fakes often have dull eyes, uneven placement or visible glue around the edges.

Feel the fabric. Genuine plush has a soft, dense pile and the beads inside are evenly distributed. Copies feel thin, lumpy or scratchy, and the shape collapses when you set the toy down.

Compare the colour to a known image of the character. Fakes frequently miss the shade, and the difference is obvious side by side.

Finally, consider the seller. Authorised retailers can tell you where their stock comes from. If a price looks far below the market, treat it as a signal rather than a bargain.

Watch the packaging on multi-buy listings too. Genuine stock arrives with tags attached and intact. Bulk lots described as tagless, or photographed with a single generic image, are worth questioning before you buy.

Be cautious with second-hand purchases from unfamiliar sellers. There is a healthy resale market for retired characters, and plenty of honest sellers in it, but you are relying entirely on the photographs. Ask for clear images of both tags and the eyes before committing, and compare them against a genuine example you already own.

Buying from an authorised source removes the guesswork.
