How to Care for Your Beanie Boos: Simple Tips to Keep Those Big Sparkly Eyes Shining

A Beanie Boo gets a lot of love. It goes to school in a backpack, sleeps on the pillow every night and joins in on car trips, sleepovers and dance competitions.

All that love can leave a Boo a little grubby. The good news is that a few simple habits keep them looking bright for years.

Check the label first

Every Beanie Boo has a sewn-in label, often called the tush tag. Check it before cleaning, as it carries Ty’s care instructions.

Most Ty plush are marked for surface washing. That means cleaning the outside gently, rather than soaking or machine washing.

How to surface clean a Beanie Boo

  • Use a soft cloth. Dampen it with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap or gentle wool wash.
  • Dab, don’t scrub. Work gently over marks, following the direction of the fur.
  • Rinse the cloth. Go over the area again with clean water to lift any soap.
  • Pat dry. Use a dry towel to soak up the extra moisture.
  • Air dry. Sit your Boo upright somewhere airy, out of direct sun.

Take extra care around the eyes. Those big glittery eyes are what make a Beanie Boo special, and rough cleaning can scratch them.

Why not the washing machine?

It’s tempting, but we don’t recommend it. Beanie Boos have small pellets inside that give them their soft, squishy sit. A full soak can leave the filling damp for days.

A spin cycle can also flatten the fur and scuff the eyes. Heat from a dryer or hair dryer can do similar damage.

Brush to keep fur fluffy

After lots of cuddles, fur can start to look flat. A soft, clean brush, like a baby’s hairbrush, will lift it again. Brush gently and in short strokes.

Look after the heart tag

The heart-shaped swing tag tells you your Boo’s name, birthday and poem. Many collectors like to keep it in perfect condition.

If you’re collecting, a clear tag protector keeps the heart tag flat and clean. If your Boo is for playing and cuddling, that’s fine too. Kids often love reading the birthday more than anything else.

Store them well

  • Keep Boos away from direct sunlight, which can fade bright colours.
  • Store them somewhere clean and dry.
  • Keep them up high if the family dog has its eye on them.
