Plush toys live hard lives. Any parent will tell you this.

Most of the tired-looking Beanie Boos we see haven't been damaged by anything dramatic, they've just spent five years in the afternoon sun collecting dust. A few habits prevent nearly all of it.

Here's our advice for safe and practical care of your Ty plush products.

Wash by hand, always. Ty plush isn't made for washing machines or dryers, and heat is what does the real harm — it mats the fur and it can wreck the glitter eyes. Cool water, a small amount of gentle detergent, work it through by hand, then rinse properly so no detergent stays in the filling. For everyday marks you don't need a full wash at all. A damp cloth and a bit of spot cleaning handles most of it.

Drying matters as much as washing. Press the water out in a towel rather than wringing, because wringing distorts the shape and it doesn't come back. Air dry out of direct sun and away from heaters, and expect it to take a day or two for anything larger than a clip. Once it's dry, run a soft brush over the fur to lift the pile again.

Dust is the main enemy of a display collection, and it's the easiest thing to fix. A soft brush every few weeks, or the low setting on a vacuum held slightly off the surface, does more for how a collection looks than any amount of washing.

Sunlight is the one people underestimate. Coloured plush fades, and it fades faster than you'd think — a pink or purple character in an afternoon-facing window will visibly shift inside a year. Keep shelves out of the direct path, or rotate the display so nothing sits in the same light for months on end.

If you're packing pieces away, skip the sealed plastic tub in the roof space. Heat and trapped moisture are a bad combination. Breathable fabric bags or a box in a cool cupboard is the better option, and don't stack weight on top of them.

Finally, tags. If value or provenance matters to you, protect the paper tag — plastic tag protectors cost very little and stop the bending and tearing that knocks the value off a retired character.

None of this needs to be precious about it. Collections are meant to be enjoyed. But a bit of care means the ones on the shelf still look like the day they arrived.
